McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. His war stories were considered by contemporary audiences as anti-sentimental, realistic depictions of the trenches, and as a 'celebration of the qualities of the Old Contemptibles'. 'So long.' The gunner subaltern waved a weary hand from his point of vantage, where he was inspecting life with a telescope. 'There's your barge, but she won't leave till to-morrow. If this goes on for much longer, my nerves will give way under the strain. The excitement is too great.'
